A World Health Organization official said Monday that she doesn’t expect to see herd immunity to the coronavirus in 2021 even as mass vaccinations in some countries are already rolling out. Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, the WHO’s chief scientist, also urged continued use of public-health mitigation practices, which include mask-wearing and social-distancing. “We have to be a little bit patient,” she said during a media briefing. “The vaccines are going to come…[but] we’re not going to achieve any levels of population immunity or herd immunity in 2021 and even if it happens in a couple of pockets, in a few countries, it’s not going to protect people across the world.”
