Gold futures climbed on Friday, in what at least one analyst referred to as quarter-end short covering, but ended the week lower as strength in the dollar for the session and the week put pressure on prices for the precious metal. April gold

rose $7.20, or 0.4%, to settle at $1,732.30 an ounce. Prices based on the most-active contract edged down by 0.5% for the week, FactSet data show.
