Democratic Sen. Manchin says he’ll oppose Biden’s budget nominee Tanden

Sen. Joe Manchin, a West Virginia Democrat, said Friday he opposes the nomination of Neera Tanden to run the White House’s Office of Management and Budget. Manchin cited what he called her past “overtly partisan statements” and said they’d have a “toxic” impact on working with lawmakers. Tanden in recent years used Twitter to criticize former President Donald Trump and Republican lawmakers, and has also been critical of the liberal Vermont independent Sen. Bernie Sanders. Manchin’s statement may doom Tanden’s nomination, as she would need 51 Senate votes for approval. Democrats control 50 Senate seats, and Vice President Kamala Harris can break a tie.
